I Fell In Love With France-Chapter 5

Chapter 5- REALLY? McDonald's??

Unlike the trip to Europe which our two oldest sons took four years ago, with the goal to eat at a McDonald's in as many countries as they could, and they did eat at a McDonald's in seven, yes 7, different countries (might I pause here to ask the question: What kind of a goal is this?), I had a goal NOT to eat at a McDonald's while I was in France. That isn't too much of a big deal since I don't eat at a McDonald's here in the states.

I was in France. Why would I want to eat at a McDonald's?

Okay, I admit, we did buy bottled water at the McDonald's in the train station. And Doug did buy himself a yogurt parfait thing. (That's French, isn't it?)

This afternoon, as I was driving in town, I heard on NPR that a McDonald's was going to be built at The Louvre, in Paris.

The Louvre?

Areyoukiddingme?

That beautiful building?

In that beautiful setting? With all that beautiful art?

Really?

(Although speaking of the beautiful setting, I have to admit that I really don't like the glass pyramids. I understand the logic behind them. But I don't like them.)

I'm glad that I didn't know about the future McDonalds while we were there. I'm glad I couldn't smell French fries while I was there. That would have been distressing to me.

We did see this:

Winged Victory of Samothrace.

And lots of other paintings and all, which one would expect being at a museum and all. But I was most fascinated with the actual building and how incredible it is.

I was also fascinated with all these people. I was fascinated that one painting could have THIS kind of an impact on a constant flow of people:

But She does. And now my eye have also seen her. And that is pretty cool...

I would like to have been able to get a closer look. But I was way too tired.

It is an experience, to be sure. A magnificent building. Full of magnificent art.

And now this wonderful ever-so-French-sight will, someday soon, contain packaging with golden arches on it. Folks will be sitting on the plaza eating Big Macs.

It seems so incongruent.

All sad joking aside, it really is a beautiful building. A magnificent building.

And that tower. It is everywhere. It is there to remind you of where you are, in case you forget.

I had a thrill every time I saw it.
