Constancy Of The Mountains

"What are you girls going to do today?"

"Well, the kid's craft is at 11:30 and Bingo is at 2:00 and the movie is at 3:00 and we think first we'll go swimming for awhile and then go play some tennis."

"Oh. Okay. The rule is: you have to stay together at all times."

"Okay. We will."

And that has been how the past few days have been. More or less. Abbie and Elena have done all the organized activities they could. And they have explored, and have fed the machines in the arcade with quarters, and have played and played and played.

Thursday afternoon we took a walk/hike to the look-out on the mountain, because it is just what we always do.

It looks the same. No changes. But we did discover a really cool hut close by that someone had built with branches. Don't know what it is for or why it is there, but it was cool.

In 2002 Velinda and some of her kids came to Snowbird for a night and a day. I did a scrapbook page about that. Miss Abbie was only 3 then. The middle picture on the bottom has four of our kids standing on some rocks being goofy:

On Thursday two of those kids, much more grown up now, stood on the same rock and smiled sweetly. Ah! The passage of time is relentless...

...as evidenced by the greying, wrinkling woman who is now me!

This is one of the main reasons I love going to Snowbird: Even with all the craziness of life, and the changes, and the ups and downs and uncertainties, there are places up here that just don't change. Every year I can come back up here and re-set my inner compass to the unchanging mountain and river and gigantic rocks. Even though the river is moving and flowing, there is constancy in the flowing. Even though some years the mountain has snow and some years it is bursting with new life, it is still always here, waiting for me to come and see and be calmed.

And I'm glad that my daughter loves coming here, too. And I'm glad that she is collecting a basket full of Snowbird memories.
